Description
In the western United States, burrowing owls may be seen nesting in abandoned prairie dog towns. In Florida, these little owls must excavate their own burrows and can often be seen busily digging in the sand to keep their home's entrance-way clear. This resident of a burrowing owl community in southwest Florida, stood watchfully atop his burrow as the morning sun rose behind him.
