A bison herd makes an early morning crossing of the Yellowstone River in Hayden Valley. Many of the bison that summer in the Hayden Valley travel through the Mary Mountain Trail (also known as the "Bison Freeway") in autumn to reach their wintering grounds near West Yellowstone, Montana.
About Sandy Sisti
I've always loved animals and nature and have been photographing both since I was a little girl in Long Island toting around my Kodak Instamatic. My lifelong love of all things wild and furry led me to relocate from New York to Wyoming to be close to the area's wealth of wildlife. During my first visit to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in 1994, I felt a special connection to the area and was determined to make it my home. I now live outside the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park in nearby, Wapiti, Wyoming. Since I left my corporate job, I spends most of my days in the company of the wildlife and wild horses that call this area home. Bison really are amazing Rory. It also makes me very sad to think about the slaughter of these magnificent animals many years ago. It was such a terrible thing that should never have happened.

I can almost hear them grunting as they cross. Beautiful ,Sandy. It is such a shame that the great herds were allowed to be decimated.
