We don't get much fall color on the range, since there aren't many trees. Because there's so little rain, the trees that are there grow in or adjacent to the waterholes. When you see the leaves begin to turn, it's time to hope that the horses come to water before the ever-present wind blows all the leaves away. I was lucky when the horses decided to visit this distant waterhole, one of the few still with water during this very dry year. Here the black stallion, Mesquite, and his band, take a quick drink before following the rest of the herd out onto the flats to graze.
I've always loved animals and nature and have been photographing both since I was a little girl in Long Island toting around my Kodak Instamatic. My lifelong love of all things wild and furry led me to relocate from New York to Wyoming to be close to the area's wealth of wildlife.
